University-Industry Collaboration and Technology Commercialization

1. As a pluralistic CTO of Weifang Beida Jade Bird Huaguang Technology Company, Ltd., from 1996 to 1998, I led a team of 150 people to build a BSP-80 broadband/narrowband hybrid super-large capacity of carrier-class switch and put it into operations in Chinese telecommunication networks. Figure 1 shows the switch on the exhibition at China International Computer and Communication Equipments Expo (1997).

2. I led a team to prototype a 64K*64K single-board intelligent ISDN switch in 1997, which was transferred to ZTE, the second largest telecommunication company in China and, has been used in the field till today. Figure 2 shows the switch card which uses my patent technology.

3. From 1999 to 2001, I was a Principal Investigator of a key project from the national 863 high-tech plan, where I led a team of more than 100 engineers/graduates to develop a high-performance scalable core router with capacity of 128 Gb/s, which had been transferred to BitWay Networks Co., Ltd. And the commercialized routers have been used in the Chinese Internet like China TELECOM, CERNET and China Uni-COM. Figure 3 shows the BitWay-12000 Core Router.

4. From year 2002 to 2005, I was a PI leading a 40-people team to develop the THNPU-1 network processor, which is the first NP prototype chip in China, and both the network processor and the traffic manager are integrated together. Figure 4 shows a router's line-card which consists of the THNPU-1 network processor. Later on, I am continuing this research to scale the network processor to THNPU-2 and THNPU-3 series, where applied many of my invention patent technologies. The THNPU-2 and THNPU-3 version is specially designed to deal with the applications such as deep packet inspection and video streaming, which represents the new emerging applications in the Internet today. Part of his research results have been published in top level conference proceedings and journals like INFOCOM and ACM/IEEE Trans. on Networking, IEEE Trans. on Computers.
